Dance & Movement Improvisation

Dance & Movement Improvisation

For dancers and movers of all levels

What if movement was your language...What if you were more available to connect to life flow and express more authenticallyWhat if you were invited to gently break through patterns and experience more freedom and new dimensions of yourselfWhat if you could elevate your practice by just listening more acutely & engaging your whole-bodied potentialWhat if you could meet yourself and others in a safe regenerative space, through play, music, movement & co-creation

The Flow Works improvisation is both a movement training and a deeply nourishing practice. We see dance as a way of healing & nurturing body, mind and soul, as much as a channel of artistic expression, esthetics & play - it must feel good not just look good!

In our holistic approach to the movement arts, we explore dance and movement principles while being rooted in somatics and the values of care and well-being. Mindfulness, Improvisation, Partnering exercises will all be a part of our toolkit. This series of workshops will introduce you to the fundamentals of art of improvisation in movement and will embrace 4 key modules:

  • SENSITIVITY - exploring the sense of self & being in your own skin (as well as heart & mind) in dance

  • MOBILITY - understanding moving structures in the body, kinetics, expanding movement 'vocabulary'

  • CONNECTIVITY - relating and interacting with self & other(s), navigating contact

  • CREATIVITY- working with imagination & storytelling in movement, co-creation & performativity

Foot & Legwork

Feet and legwork is what distinguishes a professional dancer.Professionals move with clarity from the ground up. Their steps are intentional, weight shifts are complete, and every part of the leg - toes to hips - is engaged with purpose. The floor isn't just a surface but a partner they use for grounding, power, and expression.Less experienced dancers need to build this foundation.Legwork reveals the depth of training. When the feet are precise and alive, the entire body follows. The difference shows not just in technique, but in presence — how a dancer arrives in each step. Here is the elements we can explore in the foot/legwork training:- Embodied Walk
- Weight Shift
- Balance/Imbalance/Risk
- Movement Range and Geometry
- Awareness & Precision
- Levels
- Floor as Support
- Turns/Spins

SPINAL FLOW

The spine plays a central role in a dancer’s movement — both literally and functionally. It serves as the core axis of the body, supporting balance, initiating motion, and linking the upper and lower halves into a cohesive whole.A healthy, trained spine can move in all three planes:
-Flexion and extension (bending forward and backward)
-Lateral flexion (side bending)
-Rotation (twisting along the vertical axis)
Dancers use the full range of movement to create contrast, flow, and dynamics. Whether it’s a subtle undulation in contemporary, the lifted and lengthened line in ballet, or the grounded spirals in Afro or Latin dance forms — spinal mobility adds dimension, character, and emotion to movement. The spine aids in shock absorption, turns, transitions, and directional shifts. It also plays a vital role in maintaining alignment and distributing forces safely through the body.Limited or rigid spine can restrict a dancer’s expression and increase the risk of injury. Developing both strength and flexibility in the spine allows for both control and freedom. We will use somatic instruments to access the spine gently and explore if strength and resilience could arise from softness.

TEAM

Svetlana, the founder

"I see the role of the artistic practice as a path to greater integrity. When we dance, sing, write, paint we speak with our souls. In arts, including dance, we come to meet new or forgotten sides of ourselves. Art practice becomes the research vehicle of exploring life through the body, as well as heart & mind.In such spaces of authenticity we connect with others (and ourselves) in a different way, more delicately yet more deeply.I believe in the power of human connection and have witnessed many a times the beauty of (co-)creation, birthed serendipitously in the soulful meetings & conversations".

Svetlana is a multi-disciplinary artist and embodiment practitioner. Her polyvalent background spans arts, communication, design and business.Dance has been an anchoring practice throughout Svetlana’s life. In childhood she trained in Russian classical ballet and later explored other genres- jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, Brazilian zouk, modern street, etc. It was, however, with the discovery of meditation and free-flow movement, such as 5 Rhythms, Ecstatic Dance, Authentic Movement, Integral Dance, as well as the works of Mary Stark Whitehouse, Gabriel Roth, Pina Baush, Steve Paxton, et al., when her practice evolved. Dance and body became not only vehicles for artistic expression, but a research method to explore life.Svetlana’s interest lies in mindful living, collective & personal well-being, value-based leadership, and inclusive creative practice. In her creations Svetlana likes to bring elements from diverse disciplines, navigating liminal spaces and connecting the dots. Today Svetlana explores improvisation aspects of dance, its therapeutic benefits, the concept of somatic movement & embodied flow, as well as the relationship between the language and the body.Svetlana is a trained facilitator in Inner Dance, the author of projects MBody Lab, The Sacred Language of Dance, The Artist Living Room and the creator of The Flow Works Dance Company.Svetlana believes in a role our inner creators have to play in the individual and collective change, and in art as both a social (even political) activism and an alchemical process, synchronising the material and the spiritual planes and promoting integrity.Svetlana gives workshops internationally in Greece, France, Czech Republic, Russia and Kazakhstan.
